Beauty Bassey heard about WAVE through an Alumna - Grace Isaiah.

"After i finished secondary school, I was practically sitting at home doing nothing before i got to know about WAVE."

WHY DID YOU COME TO WAVE?
I came to WAVE at first because I needed a job. As time went on during the training, I discovered I could actually learn new things which I was not taught in school. Things like how to sell myself to an employer.

WHAT CHANGED AFTER YOU JOINED WAVE?
Wave did change me. After i joined WAVE, I became bold, courageousand more outspoken because I have always been shy. I also learned how to control my emotions during the training.

WHAT WERE YOUR CHALLENGES AND EXCITEMENTS?
It was challenging for me because I had to wake up early in order to meet up with the resumption time which was not easy, having stayed at home for a while (where I slept and woke anytime I wanted to). It was exciting as the trainers treated us as if we were on the same level, coming down so low for us to understand every bit of what they were teaching. I also appreciate the fact that they made us learn how to believe in ourselves. The "serve lunch" too was amazing.

WHAT WAS YOUR JOB SHADOW EXPERIENCE LIKE?
It was interesting because I was eager to put into practice those skills I had been taught in class. It was also a platform for me to work for the first time in my life. I learned a lot in the kitchen during my job shadow which aided me in getting employed by the same company.

WHERE DO YOU CURRENTLY WORK?
I work at Start Haven, as a kitchen assistant.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR ROLE?
I like the fact that I am working i.e earning a salary and still learning. Each day, I learn how to make different meals, and also learn alternative ways of making different meals. I think it's a plus. I also like the friendly nature of my colleagues.

WHAT SKILLS DID YOU LEARN FROM WAVE AND HOW DID YOU APPLY THEM?
Integrity;which is owning up to my mistakes and taking corrections. Standing for hours which actually helped me in the kitchen. Emotional Intelligence - because I was new, both in the kitchen and the work environment. It was not easy, sometimes they shout at me. Office politics as well.

HOW OLD ARE YOU?
Bassey is 20 years old.

WHERE DO YOU STAY AND HAVE YOU WORKED BEFORE?

I live at Ikota and my training centre was at Ajah. I have never been employed.

WHAT IS YOUR HIGHEST EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION?
My highest education qualification is SSCE.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM JOB?
I want to become a footballer in the nearest future, not only because I have the passion for it. Football is a lifestyle to me. WAVE has taught me how to be patient and hardworking, and I believe with these qualities, I can achieve anything in life.

Ifeoluwa's admirer❤️
Her story is inspiring. I feel motivated. She is a young girl who at a tender age knows what she wants and she is working towards becoming her dreams.

I really love the transformation that Wave is causing in the lives of the young people. Mary's experience just stands out. She is more equipped to live. This and more is what young girls especially need to compete favorably in Nigeria. Apart from the people that are in Lagos state, how can youths from other states participate in this training? How much does the training cost? Before I go, I really appreciate the leadership of West African Vocational Education. God richly bless you. Thank.
